Compare Loan Offers: APR, Fees and Questions

To compare loan offers correctly, place each quote on the same loan amount and time horizon, then review APR, fees, payment, total cost, collateral, flexibility and lender identity. The lowest monthly payment can be the most expensive offer when it extends the term.

Collect a complete written quote

  • Amount financed and cash received
  • Interest rate and whether it is fixed or variable
  • Annual percentage rate (APR)
  • Origination, documentation, broker and mandatory third-party fees
  • Payment amount, frequency and number of payments
  • Collateral, guarantee and insurance requirements
  • Late, returned-payment and prepayment terms
  • Rate-lock or offer expiration

Compare the core numbers

Metric What it shows Limitation
Interest rate Price applied to principal Does not include every fee
APR Standardized annual credit cost including specified charges Assumes stated timing and term
Monthly payment Near-term cash requirement Can fall when total term cost rises
Total payments Cash paid over scheduled term May change for variable rates or early payoff
Net proceeds Cash actually available after deducted fees Must be confirmed in documents

Run a simple example

Offer A and Offer B both lend $20,000. A has a higher payment over three years; B has a lower payment over five years plus an origination fee. Compare APR and total scheduled payments, then calculate cost at your expected payoff date. If a fee is deducted upfront, do not pretend you received the full face amount.

Ask the lender these questions

  1. Can the rate or payment change, and under what index or event?
  2. Which fees are mandatory and refundable?
  3. Is there a balloon payment?
  4. Can I pay early, and is there a penalty?
  5. What secures the loan and when can default be declared?
  6. Who services the loan and handles disputes?
  7. Will personal guarantees or automatic debits continue after payoff?

Verify the lender

Confirm the exact legal name, license where required, address, website and contact information through an independent official source. Do not pay an advance fee to “unlock” guaranteed credit, share a one-time password or allow remote access. Compare trusted lender checks before submitting sensitive information.

Stress-test affordability

Model income decline, rate increase, delayed customer payment and emergency expense. Include existing debt and essential cash reserves. A loan can have the lowest APR and still be unsuitable if its payment timing or collateral risk is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is APR always higher than the interest rate?

Often, because APR can include specified fees, but product rules differ. Review the disclosure and assumptions.

Should I choose the lowest payment?

Not automatically. Compare term, APR, fees, total cost and affordability.

Does prequalification guarantee approval?

No. Final approval and terms usually depend on verification, underwriting and current information.
