Math skills for accounting are practical rather than mysterious. Most entry-level work relies on careful arithmetic, percentages, ratios, algebra, estimation and spreadsheet logic. The harder part is often choosing the correct inputs, signs, period and business meaning—then checking whether the answer is reasonable.

Understand common formulas

Gross margin percentage = (revenue − cost of goods sold) ÷ revenue. If revenue is $80,000 and cost of goods sold is $52,000, gross profit is $28,000 and gross margin is 35%.

Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution margin per unit. With $30,000 of fixed cost, a $50 selling price and $30 variable cost, contribution is $20 and break-even volume is 1,500 units. Assumptions such as constant price, cost and mix limit the result.

Use estimation as a control

Before calculating, predict the sign and rough size. If 8% sales tax applies to a $500 purchase, the answer should be near $40—not $400. After calculating, compare with prior periods, recalculate another way and inspect units. Estimation catches misplaced decimals and incorrect cell references.

Practice time value and statistics
